| Sailors on the Vaaldam experienced a busy weekend regarding all things racing on the 2nd and 3rd May 2009.On Saturday the 2nd May, we had the Presidents Race. This was sailed in really strong wind conditions and sailors even had to put up with a bit of precipitation. Sadly, the weather conditions deterred many sailors with only 6 boats coming to the start line and 1 boat deciding to go home before the racing started. The wind gusted between 15 and 26 knots and the bridge lay a very long windward leeward course. |

Report by Jan Laubscher
The wind was blowing a Beaufort force 5 (16 to 20 knots) throughout the event although the Windfinder.co.za forecast predicted 6 to 7 knots. Three races took place.
We had our course set out just after 09h30 but the offset mark and the committee boat were dragging anchor. We managed to set the offset mark but struggled with the committee boat. The start was postponed. On the third attempt the committee boat and the course was stable. |

A brief note to remind you of the forthcoming events. Put them in your diary and be there! The dam is almost full and the sailing is fantastic. Challenge your mates to a duel.
If any corporates wish to sponsor any events, contact us and let us know. You can have advertising rights, name trophies after your company (or yourselves), take your sponsors out on the water to watch the racing. The things we need sponsorship for are entertainment for after the racing and prizes for competitors (to entice more people onto the water). The more people we get on the water, the easier it is to get media coverage for sailing. We need to make an effort to make our sport more high profile.

Four GP14's made it to the event. As to the rest "Waar was jy?".
Saturday saw the usual rush and a push to get the boats rigged and onto the water. Once on the water for a start we got in two races before lunch in what I would term "normal Benoni" sailing ie a bit a breeze and some crazy switches making the tactical brain work overtime. For fun we had another GP sailor on his Enterprise mixing it up with the four of us and really giving us head aches upwind. After lunch we had another race and the last race was abandoned due to the compete disappearance of the wind.

What a great success and a good way to start the sailing year!
With the increase in active sailors from both our and surrounding clubs entering for the event, we had more than 20 new entrants compared to last year, ending off with 105 boats on the water, what a superb turnout!
A special note of thanks to the following classes, (Lasers, Optimists, Dabchicks, Dolphins, Finns, GP14’s, 505’s, FD’s and Enterprise’s) whose numbers increased and to the Fireballs and Gypsies, lets try and get a full class next year.
To all those that sailed and had fun while supporting a worthy cause “Thanks”, to all the helpers of which we had more than 30. “Thanks” for all the time and effort put in to make this an unforgettable event, without both groups this event would not have been possible. Last but not least a special “Thanks” to our sponsors Biddulphs and MAN who have always been more than willing to do sponsorships for us.

Peter was a mainstay of this club and did much to promote sailing with his sailing training.
His funeral service will be held at St. Stithians College Chapel at 15:00 Wednesday 28 January 2009 for those who wish to pay their last respects. |

29/30 November 2008
By Phil Bennett
48 Boats took to the water over the weekend. Racing started early on Saturday morning and in hindsight this was a good thing.
Racing was scheduled to get underway at 10:00. Once the wind settled we finally kicked off at around 10:30. The breeze at the time was around 5 to 8 knots. A variety of classes were present - this made for a cluttered start line but surprisingly few general recalls. Finishing the boats within a short period of time was a bit more challenging and the number of laps for the Mirrors and Dabbies had to be reduced in order to finish the boats within a reasonable time.

It was with regret that the NSA Interclub Regatta was cancelled on the 8 and 9 November 2008. Up to the 3 November, there had been no entries received from the Northvaal clubs. The main reason cited was that clubs rely on youth and young sailors representing their clubs but the dates clashed with both school and university examinations and so youngsters were unavailable.
The event had been scheduled for November due to the heavy event calendar at the beginning of 2008. At the NSA dinghy meeting on the 6 November, where an alternative date was reviewed, it was agreed that there was no acceptable alternative and the event will not be rescheduled during the 2008/2009 season. It was recommended that the event should be organised during the final part of the 2009/2010 season so that this clash does not happen again. |
